Introduction

Most college students interested in social impact jobs are taught to use their college newsletters and job boards and to apply to opportunities that are relevant to them. This can work, but it means that you’ll be missing out on about 97% of the opportunities out there. 70% of nonprofits or social enterprises have NO recruiting budget or recruiters - they rarely post on college job boards. Instead, they rely on their personal networks and any other resources readily at hand. As a result, for every one person that gets a job through a cold application in social impact, twelve are hired through some sort of warm connection. This document will walk you through the five key steps to shift your job search from passively hoping for jobs to come raining down to proactively seeking out opportunities that are of most interest to you.
